Where to Eat: My Favorite Restaurants in San Marco, Miramar, St. Nicholas, and Lakewood

People ask me all the time what it's actually like to live in San Marco and the neighborhoods around it. Usually I talk about the small community feel in the middle of a big city, and sometimes, I talk about the food before I even begin talking about the houses in the area. These four neighborhoods sit right next to each other along the San Jose Boulevard and Atlantic Boulevard corridors, and every one of them has at least one restaurant worth driving across town for. Here are my top picks.

San Marco: The Bearded Pig

On Kings Avenue in the heart of San Marco, The Bearded Pig has built its reputation on Texas-style barbecue done right, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and sausage smoked with real precision, served up in a laid-back space with a big pet-friendly patio. It earned a Michelin Guide 2026 badge, which is a serious nod for a counter-service BBQ joint. It's the kind of place that's equally right for a Tuesday night with the kids or a Saturday afternoon on the patio with friends.

San Marco has the most options. Here's some alternate choices, but there are still others!!

  • Rue Saint Marc – French bistro right at San Marco Square, open kitchen, Michelin Guide 2026 Florida Recommended.
  • Matthew's Restaurant – Jacksonville fine-dining fixture on Hendricks Ave for close to 30 years, Chef Alexander Yim, French technique with farm-to-table ingredients.
  • TAVERNA – Handmade pasta and wood-fired pizza in a Mediterranean-Italian setting, also Michelin Guide 2026 Recommended.
  • Town Hall – Globally-inspired menu and creative cocktails, sleek modern dining room.
  • V Pizza – Wood-fired Neapolitan pizza with Italian ingredients, popular casual pick.
  • Electric Dough Pizza Co. – 1996 San Marco Blvd, in the historic former San Marco Theatre building.  It's Roman-style rectangular pizza with Detroit-style crispy, cheesy edges. The space keeps nods to the old theater, including the original projector at the entrance.
  • Añejo Cocina Mexicana – Vibrant, contemporary Mexican spot with handcrafted cocktails.

  • Gemma Fish + Oyster –  Upscale-casual seafood spot known as San Marco's favorite rooftop, with a 12-foot raw bar featuring rotating daily oysters.

San Marco quietly holds some of the best food in the city!!

Miramar: The Local

Just south of San Marco on San Jose Boulevard, The Local has become exactly what its name promises, a genuine neighborhood spot for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's kid friendly, the staff treats you like a regular even on your first visit, and the Hendrick's burger has earned a real following. It's the kind of place that tells you a lot about Miramar itself: unpretentious, welcoming, and easy to love once you're in.

St. Nicholas: Mudville Grille

On Beach Boulevard in St. Nicholas, Mudville Grille has been Jacksonville's favorite neighborhood sports bar and grill since 1994. It's the classic American grill done well: burgers, wings, cold beer, and a full lineup of TVs for game day, with a crowd that skews regulars over tourists. St. Nicholas has always been more about substance than flash, and Mudville, more than 30 years in the same neighborhood, fits that identity exactly.

Lakewood: Mr. Gordo's Tacos and Cantina

Tucked along University Boulevard West, Mr. Gordo's has built a loyal following for its street tacos, birria, and margaritas, with reviewers consistently calling out the fresh ingredients and generous portions. It's a reminder that Lakewood, often overlooked next to its more famous neighbors, has its own genuine gems if you know where to look.

If you're looking for another option, Lakewood also has Southern Shore Seafood for fresh seafood, Southern-style favorites, fair prices, and friendly service or Cowtown Tavern serving great tavern fare and drinks to our surrounding neighborhoods.

Why this matters if you're house hunting

I mention restaurants a lot when I'm showing homes in this part of Jacksonville, and it's not just small talk. Walkability to a great local spot, a neighborhood's personality, whether it feels like a place you'd actually build a life, that's as much a part of the decision as square footage. San Marco, Miramar, St. Nicholas, and Lakewood each have their own character, and the restaurants are one of the clearest windows into what that character actually is.

If you're weighing these neighborhoods against each other for your next move, I'm happy to walk you through what makes each one different, food included.
